Sports Injuries: When to See a Physiotherapist vs Rest at Home

A minor twist or knock during sport doesn't always need clinical attention, but knowing which injuries do is what separates a quick recovery from a nagging, recurring problem.

Signs You Can Likely Rest at Home

Mild swelling that improves within 48 hours, pain that eases with rest and ice, and the ability to bear weight or move the joint without sharp pain are generally good signs. The RICE approach - rest, ice, compression, elevation - is often enough to manage these minor injuries.

Warning Signs That Need a Physiotherapist

Seek an assessment if you notice a visible deformity, are unable to put any weight on the injured area, hear a pop at the moment of injury, or if swelling and pain worsen rather than improve after a couple of days. Persistent instability, such as a joint that repeatedly gives way, is also a clear signal.

Why Early Assessment Matters

Many athletes try to push through pain, only to aggravate the injury further or develop compensatory movement patterns that cause problems elsewhere in the body. An early assessment helps confirm exactly what's injured and how to load it safely, so you return to sport stronger rather than risking re-injury.

If you're ever unsure, it's always safer to get it checked. A short consultation can save weeks of setback later on.
